Anemia is defined as a hemoglobin level below 12 g / dL. The most common type of pregnancy is iron-related anemia. Without iron, no new blood cells can be made. In this case, the oxygenation of the tissues is impaired due to the decrease in blood cells (red blood cells) that carry oxygen to the tissues. Muscle fatigue and weakness if not enough oxygen to the muscles, if the brain does not go to disrupt the mental activities and headaches, the skin does not go to the weakness of the cold, as well as the uterus and the baby can occur if you do not go to the baby. It was observed that preterm birth rate increased up to 2 times in pregnant women with anemia. The most common effect of anemia is the developmental and growth retardation of the baby (intrauterine growth retardation).
The total iron requirement of a pregnant woman during the entire pregnancy is 1000 mg. 300 mg of this is transferred to the baby and placenta. 200 mg normally disappears from the stomach and intestine. 500 mg is used to meet the increasing blood cell needs. The daily requirement during pregnancy is 7 mg. Few women have pre-pregnancy iron stores to meet this need. Red meat and green vegetables are good sources of iron, but the amount of iron taken by diet cannot meet this need. Therefore, external iron supplementation becomes a necessity during pregnancy.
Iron intake during pregnancy may increase nausea and vomiting in the first 16 weeks. If this happens, the iron supplement may be interrupted after the first 16 weeks. To reduce this effect, it may be considered to take the iron at night and on an empty stomach. It is also beneficial to increase the absorption of iron on an empty stomach. Vitamin C is another factor that increases the absorption of iron. Iron pills, which also contain this vitamin, should therefore be preferred. Iron pills can sometimes cause constipation. 200 mg of elemental iron in iron tablets is the minimum dose of iron to meet the need for pregnancy. If necessary, this dose should be exceeded. Iron needles are also available for those who cannot get iron from the mouth.
